From martin at ics.forth.gr Mon May 2 19:55:52 2022 From: martin at ics.forth.gr (Martin Doerr) Date: Mon, 2 May 2022 19:55:52 +0300 Subject: [Crm-sig] New Issue: semantically Replacing Recording Event and Externalization Event Message-ID: <2c631183-5926-8b5c-8fd6-2d95de12d3ba@ics.forth.gr> Dear All/. /Here out of the context /of //the previous e-votes: Rnn was remembered in (is memory of)/ actually means that someone produced this memory. I would rather propose a another property directly of F28: /Rnn included a memory of/: E7 Activity.? This is probably much more useful than the Recording stuff we have discussed, is specific to the author, and would help use with the missing documentation activity in CRMbase. It would also help with recording of oral traditions. "/Rnn included a memory of/:" should be restricted to physical witnesses of the event (or via recording devices). This would elegantly replace "R20 recorded (was recorded through) ,Domain: F29 Recording Event, Range: E2 Temporal Entity", and would much better suit the ample evidence of creating memories of theater plays at the BNF collected by Patrick LeBoeuf for the Europeana application of FRBRoo concepts, which included press reports, paintings etc. It could be more restrictive and be a comprehensive: /Rnn created a memory of/: . In that case, the "included" would need a specification of the part of the expressions that constitutes the memory. This discussion was held during the October 2021 SIG without a formal vote, but there seemed to be consensus. Proposal: Deprecate the class F56 Externalization Event, and its property Rnn was remembered in (is memory of). Remark on status: F56 was approved, but only in LRMoo and so has never been implemented. Rnn was never fully approved or numbered. Its superproperty is not determined and none of the examples previously proposed have been approved. Thus, it may not be quite correct to say these are being deprecated, rather they are being withdrawn? The only property of F56 is the (incomplete) Rnn which only expresses a generalization of the R17 property linking an expression creation to an expression. If you agree, vote Yes. If you disagree vote No, preferably with an explanation. To refer the discussion to a future SIG meeting, vote VETO. Please vote by April 27, at which point I will summarize for the list. This discussion was held during the October 2021 SIG without a formal vote, but there seemed to be consensus. Proposal: Deprecate the class F29 Recording Event, its associated properties R20 recorded (was recorded by), and R65 recorded aspects of (has aspects recorded through). Reasoning: The properties R20 and R65 as declared in FRBRoo ver.2.4, have issues with their superproperty statements due to changes brought in with CRMbase 7.1. As defined, only the very general property P15 was influenced by (influenced) could be a candidate superproperty that remains compatible with the ranges. The ranges of these properties are very broad: R20 has range E2 Temporal Entity, and R65 has range E18 Thing. These broad concepts of capturing, particularly R65, are much broader than the scope of LRMoo. F29 Recording Event is unneeded as a class without its specific properties. It is declared as a subclass of F28 Expression Creation, but actually should be a subclass of F30 Manifestation Creation. The F30 and F28 events can operate via recording, but the broader classes can have all the relationships needed to fully characterize the events. If you agree, vote Yes. If you disagree vote No, preferably with an explanation. To refer the discussion to a future SIG meeting, vote VETO. Please vote by May 4, at which point I will summarize for the list. For reference, the currently approved definitions. F29 Recording Event Subclass of: F28 Expression Creation Scope note: This class comprises activities that intend to convey (and preserve) the features of perdurants in a recording, such as a live recording of a performance, a documentary, or other capture of a perdurant. Such activities may follow the directions of a recording plan. They may include post-production. Examples: * the making of the recording of the third alternate take of the musical work titled ?Blue Hawaii? as performed by Elvis Presley in Hollywood, California, Radio Recorders, on March 22nd, 1961 * the making of the photograph of the three Allied leaders at Yalta in February 1945 * the making of the recording of an East Australian humpback whale song in 1994 in the framework of the Oceania Project * filming Louise Bourgeois at work in the context of the shooting of the documentary entitled ?Louise Bourgeois: The Spider, the Mistress, and the Tangerine? Properties: R20 recorded (was recorded through): E2 Temporal Entity R65 recorded aspects of (had aspects recorded through): E18 Physical Thing R20 recorded (was recorded through) Domain: F29 Recording Event Range: E2 Temporal Entity Subproperty of: E7 Activity. P15 was influenced by (influenced):E5 Event. P9i forms part of: E5 Event. P9 consists of: E5 Event Quantification: many to many, necessary (1,n:0,n) Scope note: This property associates an instance of F29 Recording Event with the instance of E2 Temporal Entity which was captured. Examples: The making of the recording of the third alternate take of the musical work entitled ?Blue Hawaii? as performed by Elvis Presley in Hollywood, California, Radio Recorders, on March 22nd, 1961 (F29) recorded Elvis Presley?s performance of the musical work entitled ?Blue Hawaii? in Hollywood, California, Radio Recorders, on March 22nd, 1961 (F31). R65 recorded aspects of (had aspects recorded through) Domain: F29 Recording Event Range: E18 Physical Thing Shortcut of: F29 Recording Event. R20 recorded: E3 Condition State. P44i is condition of: E18 Physical Thing Subproperty of shortcut of: F29 Recording Event. R20 recorded: E5 Event. P12 occurred in the presence of: E18 Physical Thing Quantification: many to many (0,n:0,n) Scope note: This property associates an instance of F29 Recording Event with an instance of E18 Physical Thing some of whose features, at the time of recording, were recorded in that process. Examples: The making of the photograph of the three Allied leaders at Yalta in February 1945 (F29) recorded aspects of Stalin (E21). Filming Louise Bourgeois at work in the context of the shooting of the documentary entitled ?Louise Bourgeois: The Spider, the Mistress, and the Tangerine? (F29) recorded aspects of Louise Bourgeois (E21). Pat Riva Acting University Librarian / Biblioth?caire en chef par int?rim Concordia University / Universit? First of all, we forgot about the three new properties AP 29-31. So the number of AP29 must be changed to AP32. Achille, Gerald and I have discussed the quantification and came to the following conclusion The first part of the quantification of AP29(32) (0, n) is fine since it seems obvious to us that the same instance of A1 Excavation Processing Unit may discard matter into multiple heaps, unless there is a clearly establishing criterion of close correspondence between each A1 and the heap in which the material extracted from it is discarded. We don't think this criterion can always be followed, so we would keep the quantification as broad as possible to enclose all the possible cases that could occur during an excavation. We equally believe that the material produced during an A1 Excavation Processing Unit can be discarded into any heap, but also simply thrown away without any order or exported to be deposited elsewhere, thereby breaking any close correspondence between the excavation and the deposit. In conclusion, our opinion that the "(0,n:0,n) many to many" is the right quantification. We also think that quantification, once decided, does not have to be motivated in the scope notes. Such a motivation is not found in the scopenotes for the other six properties with A1 Excavation Processing Unit, see below. If a motivation of the quantification is deemed necessary for AP29(32) then it is necessary for the other six properties as well. the others as well. All of these have the quantification (0,n:0,n) many to many. These properties are: AP1 produced (was produced by): S11 Amount of Matter AP2 discarded (was discarded by): S11 Amount of Matter AP4 produced surface (was surface produced by): A10 Excavation Interface AP5 removed part or all of (was partially or totally removed by): A8 Stratigraphic Unit AP6 intended to approximate (was approximated by): A3 Stratigraphic Interface AP10 destroyed (was destroyed by): S22 Segment of Matter Best, Chriistian-Emil -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... An instance of A7 Embedding is nothing else than the *substance **of the position* of *every *find within a Stratigraphic Volume Unit, *regardless whether this material* or shape has been *documented*. It is sufficient as abstract *reference of the relative position* of the find within the consolidated matter around it. It can be perceived as the ("thick") surface around the find, which *necessarily* exists before excavation. There exist however particular cases of archaeological investigation which analyze explicitly the embedding matter, for instance for chemical traces, or use the shape of the embedding for reconstructing decayed parts of the find. The class A7 should *not *be understood to be designed for these exceptional cases only, but for every position determination of a find within a layer. I hope this helps better understanding the examples. Reduced the number of questions and removed the specific location questions that were repetitive 2. Added options for extensions and translations, while also adding "sections" to the form so that a user only sees the questions relevant to them and their selection (CRMbase, translation, or extension). Additionally, only most recent versions are available as options. 3. Adjusted language to make it clear this applies to all documentation, as well as that these are "typos" as opposed to "errors". 4. The form now automatically sends a copy of the response to the submitter, and there is also an option for follow-up. Please give it a test and let us know any further feedback you may have! I still have a few issues, though, and I would be happy to go through them with you. One thought: The form shifts a lot of the burden from the CIDOC CRM editors to the submitters. If I take e.g. Pat Riva's use case of a translator spotting a small imperfection and needing a quick way of documenting them, I wonder if they are willing to answer twelve questions for each typo they find. From the submitter's perspective, what problem is solved by this form that wouldn't be solved by an email address like crm-typos at ics.forth.gr with an automated "thank you, we have received it" response? This would also allow batch submissions. I think the argument "sending an email can discourage those who are not familiar with the structure of the SIG" is valid but an email address might still be a better option. Or maybe a radically shortened form? The December meeting will be organized by C?DH in Luxembourg. The dates will be the same as previously announced: 6 - 9 December, 2022 Muriel van Ruymbeke inform us that the C?DH is particularly well equipped with hybrid meeting rooms, allowing a combination of physical and virtual audiences. The University of Luxembourg site, located in Belval, in the Commune of Esch-sur Alzette, has all the accommodation facilities at a reasonable cost. Moreover, the municipality of Esch-sur-Alzette is European Cultural Capital 2022. I would like to add that in Luxembourg, public transport is free (except for air travel), if you travel in 2nd class.
